It’s springtime! The season of sunshine, renewal, and, uh, bug infestations. Insects are getting particularly active at this time of year, so it’s common to find yourself suddenly seeing ants, cockroaches, and other crawlies that you could do without. Here’s what you can do to prevent any unwelcome guests in your commercial facility this season.
Don’t Feed the Insects!
Bugs are coming into your facility or home because they are looking for shelter, water, and food. If you don’t give them these things, they’re not going to be all that interested. Food is the biggest one. Don’t leave out any treats for bugs. Wipe up any food crumbs immediately, and store all food in an airtight container.
Take the Garbage Out Frequently
Garbage is another favourite food source for insects, so you’ll dissuade them if you take your garbage out often (you don’t have to wait for it to be full, just get rid of it every few days). Make sure you also wipe down recycling and waste bins after emptying them.
Block off Points of Entry
Any small openings that don’t seem like a big deal to us can be like a highway for insects looking for a route into a building. Grab the spackle and patch up any cracks in walls, even the tiniest ones.
Remove Water Sources
Standing water attracts insects of all kinds, so be careful not to leave any water out. If you have a dripping tap or a leaky pipe anywhere, get it repaired as soon as you notice it to prevent any water pooling and attracting pests.
Install Window Screens
If you have openable windows, it’s wonderful to get some air in from the outside, but bugs can easily come in this way. Install screens on any windows in your facility that are ever opened so you can let the fresh air in without letting anything else in!
