Gloved hands cleaning a stain out of a white carpet.

If you have carpeting in your commercial space, odds are you’ve made at least one of these common carpet cleaning mistakes.

Rubbing, not Dabbing

Often when people spill something onto a carpet, their instinct is to immediately rub it hard in an attempt to get rid of the spill and prevent staining. However, rubbing a spill will actually drive it deeper into the carpet and can cause staining. Instead of rubbing a carpet that’s been spilled on, gently dab at the affected area. The idea is to lift the stain away, not rub it into the fibres.

Not Vacuuming Regularly

Regular vacuuming is important for keeping your carpet looking clean and new. If particles from dust, dirt, and debris are allowed to settle into your carpet for too long, they will begin to wear down the carpet fibres, eventually leading to a worn-down, matted looking carpet. Make sure that your carpet is being vacuumed at least once a week for best results.

Not Doing a Test Patch

If you’re using a new stain remover product, make sure that you test it first on a small patch of carpet that isn’t visible (such as an area that’s hidden by furniture) in case the chemicals cause the carpet to become discoloured. Once you’ve done a test patch, you can confidently use the stain remover anywhere else on your carpet.

Not Hiring Professional Carpet Cleaners

If you don’t get your carpet professionally cleaned once every year or so, it will show. Your carpet will begin to look dingy and will wear down more quickly. Having your carpet professionally steam cleaned keeps it looking its best, making your space more inviting to visitors and staff.
