Commercial Bathroom Cleaning Tips

Are you cleaning the bathroom in your commercial space effectively? It is essential to thoroughly clean bathrooms on a frequent basis in order to prevent the spread of germs and maintain a hygienic, safe, and welcoming bathroom for staff, customers, and guests. Here are some of our best tips for cleaning a commercial bathroom.

Protect Yourself

Remember that cleaning a bathroom means you’ll be getting up close and personal with all those germs that make the bathroom their home. Before you start cleaning, be sure to protect yourself by wearing the proper gear. Latex gloves and a face mask will help to protect you from germ exposure, and be sure to wash your hands thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water) after you finish the task.

Pay Special Attention to High-Touch Surfaces

There are a lot of high-touch surfaces in commercial bathrooms that are breeding grounds for harmful bacteria and other germs (not just toilet seats!). Make sure that you take extra care when sanitizing the following high-touch surfaces in the bathroom, and clean these surfaces frequently.

High-Touch Bathroom Surfaces

  • Sinks, especially faucet handles
  • Toilets, especially seats and lids
  • Urinals
  • Door Handles
  • Soap & Paper Towel Dispensers
  • Countertops

Clean Toilets and Urinals First

You should always flush a toilet after cleaning it so that the cleaner makes its way down the drain, but flushing a toilet can send particles from the toilet onto nearby surfaces such as counters, sinks, and floors. Clean these surfaces after cleaning the toilets in order to leave them properly sanitized.

Schedule Cleaning at a Convenient Time

Try to schedule your cleaning at a less busy time of day when customers and/or staff are less likely to need to use the bathroom. This will make it more convenient for people who need to use the bathroom and will lessen the amount of times that you’re pulled away from cleaning to let people know that the bathroom is closed for cleaning. Schedule your cleaning either after regular business hours or at a time when you know there is generally less traffic to the bathroom.
